Amina Grace Speech and Language Spotlight: Caiden
3-year-old Caiden works hard in the Amina Grace Speech & Language program at GiGi’s Playhouse Hoffman Estates each week. He is currently working on yes/no and wh- type questions, specifically who questions such as- Who is tired? Who is sad?, as a means to expand his level of understanding of questions.
He is also working hard on bilabial sounds “M”, “B”, “P” within words – with GiGi’s SLP Taylor using a popsicle stick as way to help him with his “B’s”. The popsicle stick is used to help get the lips sealed which is necessary for these sounds. These sounds not only need the lips closed to produce, but also need air pressure to build up for the “explosive” sound when the lips are opened and air is released.
What is that in his mouth you might ask? Well, it’s sensory chewelry (like jewelry and chewy combined). It is shaped so it can be placed on the back molars where chewing is most impactful. The chewing provides calming proprioceptive input to the jaw as well as an alternative to chewing on other items (toys, clothes, self, etc.). This is a sensory technique to calm the body and regulate so he can focus and attend.
Caiden is working hard and making great progress!
