Amina Grace Speech and Language Program

The world places a high value on being a productive member of society. Having intelligible speech is an important skill that greatly impacts how others perceive your abilities. Speech is a complex activity that requires tremendous coordination, muscle control and specific tongue movements. Many of us speak with ease and don’t realize that it takes 70 muscles to say 1 word! Individuals with Down syndrome have hypotonia, or reduced muscle strength, which makes speech a difficult task throughout their whole life.

The Amina Grace Speech and Language program provides youths, teens and adults with the opportunity to refine their speech and language skills. The program is open to participants of all ages and each participant works 1 on 1 with a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist. The participant is initially assessed by the therapist and then agrees to work on 3-5 goals throughout the 10 week session. Success gained through the programs continue for participants in their natural setting as they communicate with others at home, school and in the community. The benefits of the program include increased self-confidence, improved school and social readiness and increased independence and overall quality of life.

The Amina Grace Speech and Communication Program is changing lives every day. Because of one courageous family hundreds of children and adult with Down syndrome are receiving life change speech therapy at GiGi’s Playhouse locations across the country. Imagine if your child could not communicate to you that someone was hurting them or that they could not make friends because the kids don’t understand why they cannot talk. These are the realities families face every day and we are so grateful that the Amina Grace Speech and Communication Program is helping them overcome these issues.

When the Ali family came to me after Amina passed away and offered their help for other children I was in awe their courage and strength. For them to rise above their incredible grief and pain and think of helping others was beyond inspiring. Every time I walk past the Amina Grace reading area at the GiGi’s Playhouse in Hoffman Estates I feel Amina’s playful spirit and I know she is there cheering us all on. I am blessed to be a part of this program and to watch lives be transformed by it every day. Beautiful Amina Grace continues to change lives every day through a family who are truly extraordinary.

Sabrina has done a wonderful job working with Pasquale. We have noticed that he has been much more engaging at home in conversations. This used to be very difficult for him. We love that Sabrina works so well with him and have loved getting to know her this session. We are so fortunate to be able to continue Speech at GiGi’s and are so thankful for the progress we have seen so far.

Pasquale's Mom

We have been so impressed with Grace’s speech progress. She is now communicating with us using three or more words and her clarity has greatly improved! It’s amazing the doors that have been opened now that she can voice her opinion, communicate her needs, and express herself verbally. She’s got a lot to say, and now we’re hearing it! Thank you so much to GiGi’s and the Amina Grace Speech and Language Program, and of course, Miss Taylor! We can’t say enough how grateful we are!

Grace's Mom

Nicole had a hard time speaking and was extremely difficult to understand. When she was younger, she was in speech therapy for three years at our local hospital. She did not do very well there. Once we found GiGi’s and the Amina Grace Speech and Language Program, she sky-rocketed. Now, everyone at GiGi’s is able to understand her speech much better than when she first started in 2015. She is now able to talk and be understood on the phone with her friends. This program is phenomenal. She absolutely loves it.
